West Indian cricketing legend Brian Lara has called upon Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the top ranked batsman in Test cricket to bat higher up in the batting order against stronger teams like Australia, South Africa and England.
The West Indies cricket team are currently on tour of England where they play a three match Test series against the number one Test team in the world and after the first Test at Lord’s, they already find themselves down 1-0 in the series. According to Lara, he doesn’t quite understand why the left hander is so reluctant to bat higher up in the order.
Lara, who was one of the best and most stylish cricketers of his generation, also added that for a player who can be as consistent as Chanderpaul, he had no reason whatsoever to bat lower down the order and should raise his hands and go up the order along with the other talented and more experienced players of the current side. According to Brian Lara, the best batsman in the side should always be batting at the number three position. He is the one who will be the anchorman of an innings and laying the foundation for a win.
He went on to add that there is no point in the best batsman of a side coming in at number five, repairing the damage done to the upper order and all the chances of winning the Test match is already gone by that time.
Chanderpaul is also the second person in the history of cricket in the West Indies to reach 10,000 Test runs after the legendary Brian Lara and the former captain feels that the 37 year old should be the leader of the side on the batting front and leave the rest to the team led by Darren Sammy.
