England in Wisden’s

Somewhat unsurprisingly, four of England’s 2009 Ashes-winning team have been named among Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.

Stuart Broad, Matt Prior, Graham Onions and Graeme Swann were lauded for their outstanding efforts in the past 12 months, guiding England to a 2-1 series win over Australia as well as a 1-1 away draw against South Africa.

Considering no player can win the award on two occasions, the quartet, alongside Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke, were among the few remaining players in England’s Test line-up not to have been previously named in the annual unveiling of cricket’s ubiquitous almanac.

Current editor Scyld Berry’s criterion for selecting his quintet is “excellence in the previous English summer” – and all five did exactly that, while Swann in particular has cemented his name among the world’s best players.
