The former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has said that if Virat Kohli continues playing like this, he might end up breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring the most number of hundreds in One Day Internationals.
Kohli is just 24 years of age at the moment and he has only played 112 ODIs, but, he has already scored 17 tons. If he maintains his fitness, he will surely play for another 13-14 years and the no. of ODIs being played these days, there is a good possibility that he will break Tendulkar’s record.
In the ongoing ODI series against Australia, Kohli has shown some terrific form. In his 4 innings in 6 matches so far, he has scored 2 hundreds and 2 half centuries and these stats are enough to tell how well he is batting at the moment.
Talking to the reporters after India’s win over Australia in the 6th ODI, Gavaskar said, “Virat is playing some brilliant cricket at the moment. Apart from being a great batsman, he is a great analyzer of the situations as well. He knows at which pace he has to go in a particular situation and that’s what makes him a bit different from others.”
“Also, he played with some great batsmen like Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid at the start of his career and that helped him a lot.”
When asked about the possibility of Kohli breaking Tendulkar’s record of the most hundreds in ODIs, Gavaskar said, “The way he is playing at the moment, he can do that. He already has 17 and if he maintains his form, he might take his tally to 20 at the end of this season.”
Tendulkar scored a total of 49 hundreds in his One Day International career. He retired from this form of the game towards the end of last year.
