The 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh is going to be a defining series for the limited-over career of the Indian top order batsman Ajinkya Rahane. It might well be the make or break for him.
Rahane has got a lot of opportunities in the shorter versions of the game in the last few months, but, he hasn’t been able to make any sort of impact. He has failed in most of the limited-over matches that he has played in the recent past and if some of the regular players had not been rested for this series against Bangladesh; he would probably not have been included into the squad.
Rahane played some good innings for his franchise Rajasthan Royals in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League which has finished just days ago. So, his current form is good. He just needs to capitalize on that form and score big on a couple of occasions in the Bangladesh series to make his case strong for selection in the squad for the England tour.
In the first match of the series which will be played tomorrow, Rahane in all likelihood would bat in the top order. He would either be sent to open the innings with Robin Uthappa or he would walk in at the one down position. So, he would get ample time to get himself in and play big.
Rahane’s performance in test cricket off late has been extraordinary though. He played some classy knocks on the tough tours of South Africa and New Zealand and he has, now, established himself in the test side, but, his limited-over career is not on track at all.
If he has to get selected in India’s squad for the World Cup 2015, he needs to be consistent in the One Day International matches that he plays from now on.
