The Sachin Tendulkar owned Kochi franchise of the Indian Super League or ISL has been christened as the Kerala Blasters.
The new team and the name was announced by incumbent Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy after he had a brief meeting with the Indian cricketing legend in the capital last week.
The former Indian batsman also accepted the Kerala Chief Minister’s request to become the Goodwill Ambassador for the National Games which will be held in Kerala next year.
Tendulkar arrived at the Kochi airport with entourage and was given a rousing reception at the airport as well as the state secretariat and he also called on former Chief Minister and leader of opposition VS Achuthanandan as he seeks support to develop and promote the football in the state.
Tendulkar emerged from his meeting with Chandy in the Chief Minister’s chamber and spoke about he was overwhelmed and touched by the massive support he has been given by the people of Kerala as well as the government.
On the link between his own nickname and the team name, Tendulkar had a smirk on his face that he loved being called the Master Blaster and there might just be a connection with the name of the new team but he left it to the imagination to all those that had assembled to see him.
The Indian legend said that although cricket has been his profession, he loved other sports too. He said that he grew up playing not only cricket but tennis, badminton, hockey and football as well.
He believes the new Indian Super League will take the beautiful game to a whole new level as it plans to develop the game from the grassroots all the way up and build adequate infrastructure for the overall development of sport in the country.
